There is a belief that dogs are the ones in need of behavioral training. The truth is, it is for them just as much as it is for us. And this is fundamental.
Terah Gisolo joins us today to talk about how training really works, by sharing with us her two decades of experience in animal welfare doing everything from fostering and networking, to shelter work and building and running her own rescue in California, Texas, and New York.
Terah is the Founder and Executive Director of Real Good Rescue, a 501(c)3 nonprofit all about the dogs, dedicated to educating and providing awareness to end the abuse of dogs; to ensure all dogs live in a loving home rather than in a shelter or on the streets.
RGR is a 501c3 foster based dog rescue saving and rehabilitating the old, sick, discarded, unwanted and the at risk of being killed in our shelters in Los Angeles, CA. We work with our fosters, adopters and reputable trainers to help educate and ensure proper decompression, integration and handling of a new dog is in place once they are in a home. One of the easy parts of rescue is getting dogs out of the shelter, the work begins the day they leave and we want to empower and support the Real Good Gang, setting both humans and dogs up for success.
ADOPT COLIN!
COLIN: Saved from being killed at the Devore shelter in December of 2021. He spent 3.5 months in a board and train program and also became a completely different dog. He spent 3.5 months in a board and train program and is now in boarding waiting for the right foster or even better, adopter, to welcome him into their home. His bio, before and after photos are below.Cost of training and boarding to date, $9,150
Colin is approximately 2 years old, 85 lbs, once completely shut down and terrified of people, he has become a more balanced athlete.
Colin would do best with:
- An active human – this is a non-negotiable for this kid
- An experienced handler
- A leader who will maintain the structure that he thrives under
- He loves kids
- He’s not into our cat friends
- He’s not into small dogs
- Crate trained
- House trained
- He could be with another dog his size who has an easy going and chill personality but would also shine as the only dog.
- Bonus points if you have a yard since this kid loves some morning laps.
ADOPT JEFF!
JEFF: Saved from being killed at the Lancaster shelter in November of 2021. He spent 3 months in a board and train program and has made so much progress on becoming a balanced dog; he is now in boarding looking for a foster or adopter to give him the home he deserves. Check out his bio and before and after photos below.Cost of training and boarding to date, $9,625
Jeff is approximately 3 years old, about 55/60 lbs, once insecure and now out of his shell, more balanced and a huge goofball!
Jeff would do best with:
- An active human – think running or hiking
- A leader – he responds very well to structure and guidance.
- Someone who likes routine – the A type
- Someone with no human kiddos (Jeff does best with structure and we don’t want that responsibility to fall on a kid).
- He’s not into our cat friends
- He’s not into small dogs
- Crate trained
- House trained
- He could be with another dog his size who has an easy going and chill personality but would also shine as the only dog.
- Bonus points if you have a yard since this kid loves some morning laps.
