Dogs play a major role in each person’s life. Dogs also make a positive difference in black women’s lives because they comfort us in a way that we may not feel in our everyday lives. It is important to see black women with dogs because there are many different negative stereotypes that black community shares with dogs. Seeing how loving and caring black women are with dogs helps break that stereotype. It is important for us as black women to show that we are awesome dog moms too.
Christina Davis, who is a wonderful dog mom herself, spent some time researching different animal rescues in the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) area and adopted her two year old puppy, Kanna, in 2019. She’s successfully created a safe space on Instagram and Facebook.
Christina is working towards educating her community about animal welfare. Her vision is to help more black women get recognized for their work in the animal welfare community. Representation is very important when it comes to black women that are involved in animal welfare.
A lot of times people may have an idea that black women are not interested in being a part of the animal welfare community, and also may not have access to some of the information needed. If animal rescues were interested in working with more members of the black community it would be great to start by reaching out with more information.
Joining the Black Women Love Dogs community is a great way to connect and ask questions, and get educated by some of the other women that have been working with animal rescues.
One of Christina’s proudest accomplishments was her first dog social event. She was able to get over 50 black women, who were pet owners together to connect and bond over being animal lovers. This has inspired her to continue to research on how to be a better pet owner, and to share this information to her peers. In the future, Christina possibly wants to create a YouTube channel to help share tips on how to get involved with animal rescues, and share information about animal care to a wider audience.
