By now, everyone has heard stories of families across the country who are going without and struggling to feed their animals. After several hard years, more and more families are seeking support from programs like pet food pantries, including those who’ve never before received support services.
When most of us picture these households, we see a family and one or two (or three or four!) pets who share not only their lives, but their homes as well. We often don’t think of another kind of “family” – that of the community cat caretaker and their colony of cats. These caretakers are among the most dedicated guardians and with entire colonies to care for, they too are feeling the weight associated with just making ends meet.
Serving the Northern Colorado community, Animal Friends Alliance have designed a program to help struggling communities care for and feed their animals. The Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry provides support to any individual experiencing hard times and needs a helping hand to feed their beloved animals. This opportunity doesn’t just stop at traditional families though, the Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry also helps caretakers caring for community cat colonies, recognizing the bond between a caretaker and their cats is just as strong!
For one of their clients, living in a remote, rural area made accessing resources difficult and with a very large colony on his property, things quickly became more than he could manage. Animal Friends Alliance was able to step in and offer wraparound support including trap, neuter, return for 44 cats and foster and adoption placement for another 27. To keep him on his feet, the Kibble Supply ensures he has the over 100 pounds he needs each month to feed his, now much smaller and much healthier, family of felines.
This is just one story of many though, with the Kibble Supply supporting almost 400 community cats and their dedicated caretakers on a regular basis. This support is so critical, not just ensuring the cats are fed, but also enabling caretakers to use their funds to ensure their cats are spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and helps prevent them from being relinquished to the shelter, where outcomes can be limited for those who are unsocialized.
Animal Friends Alliance is an adoption-guaranteed shelter and spay/neuter clinic that offers resources to keep pets in their loving homes and with their families, even when they look a little bit different. If you are in the Northern Colorado area, we strongly encourage you to check out the Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry program and Animal Friends Alliance to see how you can become involved.
