We all want our dogs to behave, but sometime they act out and it can be stressful. After years of experience, John Flores from IPittytheBull Foundation learned there is one simple way to a calmer and more well-behaved dog- and it’s harder to correct than you think.
Self-awareness. That’s right, it all comes back to your own behavior.
Your dog takes cues from you and they are constantly learning the difference between friend and foe based on your reaction. They watch you all day long, so they may be catching on to things you don’t even notice yourself.
John talks about an experience he had with his personal dog, Elvis, during football season. He’d spend hours in front of the TV, cheering on his team and lamenting bad calls, and Elvis started to notice.
Elvis started becoming aggressive towards the TV set. After all, his human was always screaming at it.
It was a routine that taught Elvis how he should be responding, so it required a routine to break the behavior. We’re all creatures of habit, and by becoming self-aware, we can send our dogs the right signals.
