How to prepare your pets for a holiday season full of visitors, new scents, and shared spaces.
The holidays are almost here! It’s that magical time when families gather, the house smells like cinnamon, and “someone” inevitably knocks over your grandmother’s priceless crystal nutcracker. This is also the time of year when little ones (and sometimes adults, too) start asking Santa for a new furry friend under the tree. But what if your home is already ruled by one or two four-legged family members? If you’re considering adding another pet to the mix this season, you might be wondering: Can my cat and dog actually live together in peace?
The short answer: yes. The longer answer: yes… with a plan.
Step 1: Start Slow
First impressions matter. Keep your cat and dog separated at first so they can sniff each other from a safe, calm distance. Think of it as a polite “hello,” but without the awkward small talk and lingering.
Step 2: Swap Scents
Before they meet face-to-face, switch blankets, beds, or toys so they get used to each other’s smell.
Step 3: Supervised Introductions
When it’s time for the big reveal, keep your dog on a leash and let your cat take the lead. If the cat wants to observe from the top of the fridge like a judgmental holiday elf, that’s fine. Give them time. Cats typically tend to be the more temperamental pets (No cat hate here, just the truth), and sometimes a rambunctious and curious puppy can cause more harm than good.
Step 4: Use Treats Wisely
Praise and reward every calm moment. Here’s where your secret weapon comes in: CUDDLY Turkey & Chicken Crispers. They’re crunchy, healthy, and most importantly, both dog and cat-friendly. Honestly, I wish adults got a treat every time we had to mingle at one of those obligatory holiday parties.
Step 5: Keep The Vibes Calm
Calm energy and patience go a long way. Remember, everyone in the house is trying their best this season, pets included. Your pets look to you for guidance, and if your energy is nervous and frantic, theirs will be too. Be like Jack Frost, and just chill.
There’s something extra special about watching a cat and dog coexist. Bringing pets together is a lot like bringing families together: it takes time, a little patience, and the occasional snack to keep everyone in good spirits. But when it works, it’s pure holiday magic.
